2010-11 SOPA BOARD ELECTIONS & MEETING
Tuesday, June 8
6:45pm in the Library
A new SOPA Board of Directors was voted in Tuesday evening! The 2010-2011 board members are Ingrid Zellinger, Dave Riddell, Andy Berenson, Debbie Cabanday, Amy Cross, Don Lukenbill, Mariana Rodriguez, Ronna Elbaz, and Brian Metz. Thank you all for stepping up for these vital, extremely important roles for the betterment of the whole school.
Tuesday night was a special meeting. We hugged three outgoing Board members, all who have literally made the SOES experience what it is today -- Patty Puskar, Jody Bradley, and Audrey Santos. Each has put in uncountable time, passion, and dedication towards the betterment of all our children's educations and the SOES environment, and their legacies will continue for years to come. They will be missed on the board, but will continue their great works at the school in the coming years. Thank you.
Our annual Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Jody and Linda Bradley, who have been two of the most influential people making SOES what it is today. One or the other has lead programs ranging from the SOPA Board, Homework Club, School Tours, the computer lab build, Teacher Appreciation, Bulletin Board, Ice Cream Social, Concert decorations, and on and on throughout the years. Think of something you love about the school, and it's a good chance the Bradleys were instrumental in it. And the good news is they have several more years at the school! Thank you, Jody and Linda! |
TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
Monday, June 7
Thank you to all our incredible teachers, administration, and staff. We adore you and all you do for our kids.
Monday brought an annual special event where parents were able to show our appreciation for all the school's staff -- the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. Parents transformed the library into a traditional Chinese ambience, replete with dragons, fans, lanterns, and bamboo decor. A catered Chinese-food buffet was served by the parents, topped off with huge gourmet fortune cookies. Meanwhile, four professional masseuses treated the teachers to relaxing massages, and a special celebration of the retiring Mr. Parth touched everyone's hearts.
Huge thank yous to Linda Bradley and her outstanding team of parent volunteers who put on this special event for our very special teachers. |
SPRING SING
Monday, June 6, 8:45am
Central Playground
UPDATE:
All the grades dazzled the audience Monday morning with their singing. The children sang, danced, and signed songs about caring for our environment while dressed in shirts and hats they created.
Thank you to Mrs. Rodgriguez, our amazing music teacher, and to all the classroom teachers and volunteers, for all the great efforts in putting on this show for the parents.
Furthermore, thank you to all the parents and stakeholders of SOES who have donated money and efforts, providing programs like Music for our kids. With all the state budget cuts, the arts are first to get cut from schools, but at SOES, thanks to our parents, next year we will have Mrs. R five days every week for all our kids to learn music technique, theory, history, and performance!
Come enjoy our children's culminating performance of their music program! Each grade level will perform two songs, and our school chorus will dazzle us, as well.
See you there!

TREE PLANTING!
What a fun day!
Classes came out and dug holes, planted trees, mulched, watered, and lovingly welcomed in 16 new trees around the central campus! The gentle swaying of the new trees beautifies the play yard already, and the shade that will come as the trees grow will be a pleasant addition to the grounds.
HUGE thank yous to the TreePeople volunteers who worked hand in hand with us for many, many months in the planning, as well as leading the day's plantings, and to all our amazing parent volunteers who made the day happen! The Tree People commented on our fantastic Green Team -- one of the best they've ever worked with!!
And, of course, thank you to the administration and all the teachers and their classes who are so excited about their new trees. Kids have been seen blowing kisses and praising their new trees around campus.

SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM
UPDATE:
Saturday, Mar 6
Our boys are CHAMPIONS OF LOS ANGELES!
#1 in one of the largest cities and school districts in the world!
Way to go! Go Tigers!!!
GAME SUMMARY
Coming into the City Championships, our Tigers were 8-0, winning all their games by over 20 points each. The L.A. semi-final game continued this trend with a solid team effort and a 35-12 victory.
But the final pitted the two top teams in the city, and the Tigers faced a spirited and tenacious team from the Science Center
School from the South region.
From the tip off, the crowd could tell this was going to be an incredible game. With Sherman Oaks in their blue jerseys and Science Center in red, the court was a dazzling visual delight: bold colors dashing and weaving and swirling around each other, with the blurry orange orb commanding everyone's attention.
Science Ctr scored the first points to open the game, and played tough defense throughout the first half. They were by far the quickest and sharpest shooting team the Tigers had faced all season. Sherman Oaks matched the high intensity and raised it up a notch, and through great teamwork and supreme skill, battled to a one-point lead at halftime.
After the break, the Tigers came out determined and never let up. Amazing ball handling, precise passes, and solid shooting yielded a flurry of points for the boys in blue. After they began pulling away, Sherman Oaks' dominant defensive play secured the win. The buzzer made it official -- the Sherman Oaks Elementary basketball team is tops in the land. The team and S.O. fans alike celebrated a hard fought win, and the culmination to an incredible season.

Wow -- Way to go, boys!
Go Tigers!!!

The boys will play in another tournament
on February 20.
***If you are free, make sure to come to the games. These boys are really amazing. Even the referees were in awe. (In the final game, they beat a very good team 67-4!). As the tournaments progress, the competition will get even more exciting! It's a great community event.
Come out and cheer on your schoolmates!
Go Tigers!!!

PJs & BOOKS NIGHT
Friday, Feb 26, 6pm
School Library
UPDATE:
What a fun night! Children (and some adults, yay!) arrived in their favorite pjs, cozied up on their blankets and pillows, and enjoyed 3 different authors/illustrators (and the Statue of Liberty!) reading their books. The children's excitement was matched by the authors' zeal and talents, which inspired us all.
Afterwards, homemade cookies and milk capped off the night while the authors signed books for the children.
CLICK HERE to see photos!
A huge thank you goes to Jill Hotchkiss, who organized and ran this wonderful event! And special thank yous to Chris Robertson and the Statue of Liberty (Little Miss Liberty) , Scott Langteau
(Sofa Boy), and Dallas Clayton (An Awesome Book!) for great readings. Dallas Clayton was especially awesome -- for every book sold on the night, he donated one of his books for free!
This is one of our community events that makes SOES such a special place.
---------------------------------
Kids (and adults!), wear your pjs, bring your blankets and stuffed animals, and come enjoy authors reading their stories! Get to the library by 6pm (it fills up quickly!), reading will begin at 6:15pm. We are expecting three authors at the event.
Afterwards, we'll enjoy homemade cookies and milk in the cafeteria!
This is one of our community events that makes SOES such a special place. See you there!
We need your homemade cookies for this event!
Last year we got lots of homebaked cookies and the night was made all the more special. Please bring in a dozen or more cookies with you, and you'll see a lot of smiling faces at the end of the night!
Please drop them off in the cafeteria by 6pm. Thanks!

SOES MUSIC APPRECIATION DAY & CONCERT
Friday, January 29th (during school hours)
UPDATE:
Sherman Oaks was ROCKING Friday!
The auditorium hosted 5 amazing professional musicians, educating our students about their instruments, their careers, and their own
personal journeys with music, starting at 5-10 years old, just like the students!
Each musician taught about and demonstrated their instrument:
Davey Jonstone (Elton John's musical director and lead guitarist) electrified the crowd with his electric guitar and mandolin;
Martin Tillman (composer and world renowned cellist, heard in the Transformers, Batman, Shrek, Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and many more) wowed the crowd with unbelievable sounds from under the sea (dolphins, whales, and water) and some tunes from the Pirates movies that all the kids went crazy over;
Denny Seiwell (drummer for Paul McCartney and Wings, Billy Joel, James Brown, and more) got the place thumping displaying the different percussions, rhythms, and combinations using a drum set;
Jesse Jonstone (session musician on piano and various guitars) displayed the bass guitar and how it is different from lead guitar; and
Adam Chester (pianist for Elton John's band, composer for film, T.V., and radio, and SOES father extraordinaire) dazzled the kids with his keyboard, showing its range of sounds and the instruments it can replicate, especially the piano!
The musicians' tales from their young experiences with music, and how "practicing" quickly transitioned into a passion for "playing," inspired young audience members with what can be accomplished when one follows his/her passions.
The children transitioned from being mesmerized to rocking out in their seats to cheering at top lung for the stars on stage, and teachers were dancing in the aisles while the musicians and the student choir brought down the house with We Will Rock You/I Love Rock-n-Roll, Yellow Submarine, Crocodile Rock, and Roll Over Beethoven!
We can't thank Davey, Martin, Denny, Jesse, and Adam enough -- the best assembly ever!
For any communication regarding this amazing event, please contact Maria and Adam Chester at m13chester@gmail.com.
------------------------------------------
Music Appreciation Day will be a day where professional musicians come and discuss their instruments and play a few songs for the students at Sherman Oaks Elementary.
It will be held in the auditorium during the school day on Friday, January 29th. That's coming up fast! We're looking for volunteers to help with setting up on that day. We'll also need to assign individuals to each musician for load-in to the auditorium and set-up in the morning (9am), and for break down at the end of the day (2:30pm).
If you can help, please contact Maria and Adam Chester at m13chester@gmail.com. This is going to be a very exciting day and we need as much manpower as possible.
**SPECIAL NOTE TO 4th & 5th Grade Parents:
Make sure to sign and turn in your child's Music Appreciation Day Permission Slip (4th & 5th graders only) by Tues. Jan 26th. We wouldn't want your children to miss the opportunity to sing with some great musicians!

GETTING INVOLVED
Lots and lots of families have been asking how they can get involved with SOPA and at the school.
You all are awesome! The continuation and future of our amazing school seems in good hands!
Here are a few immediate suggestions:
* |
Your child's classroom!
| * |
As a room parent.
Our network of great communication and classroom events depend on our great room parents!
Contact Andy at andy@shermanoaksparents.com. |
| * |
As a classroom volunteer.
On a weekly basis, or more, or whenever you can, this is more important than ever to help lower the student-adult ratio, and to help the teacher prepare materials for the children.
See your teacher for details. |
|
| |
|
* |
Stop, Drop, & Roll! |
|
(morning drop off greeters)
Volunteers are needed immediately to get this program rolling.
Contact Don at don@shermanoaksparents.com. |
| |
|
* |
Halloween Carnival!
One of the best events we all put on, fun for all!
Contact Debbie at debbie@shermanoaksparents.com. |
| |
|
* |
Homework Club!
One of the most rewarding volunteer activities: great for the kids' understanding of material, great to see the spectrum of learning across the grades, and great for the "family atmosphere" at the school.
Contact Jody at jody@shermanoaksparents.com. |
| |
|
* |
Campus Beautification!
Become part of SOES' Green Team!
Planned projects are:
| * |
Beautification Day - Clean up, spruce up, and plant pretty plants around campus! |
| * |
Tree Planting - in November, the children, teachers, and family members will be planting roughly 40 new trees around the campus and play yard!
Contact Amy at amy@shermanoaksparents.com if you want to attend the TreePeople workshop that many of us will attend on Sat, Sept 19! |
| * |
Reading Gardens - installing 2 or 3 reading gardens throughout the campus! |
| * |
Painted Murals - we need your skills, artists and painters! A large U.S. map, faux scenery, and whimsical murals all around campus! |
This is the year we transform SOES into an incredible, inspiring campus. Let's do it!
